Based on a true story, Giuseppe Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera was initially prohibited by censors because it called for a king’s assassination. Relocated from Sweden to Boston, Un Ballo is filled with passion, mysticism and misunderstanding. Even though the love between Riccardo and Amelia was a non-physical infatuation, the enraged husband, Renato, ultimately executes his revenge.

Vocal Productions NYC once again mounts a gripping Verdi production with four separate casts; giving more New York artists a magnificent performing opportunity with orchestra. Each night will feature a different Riccardo, Amelia, Ulrica and Renato, etc. Only the chorus and orchestra will remain the same. Consequently, you are treated to a slightly different version each night, all with superb voices. General Manager and Artistic Director, Valentin Peytchinov, welcomes you to experience the excitement of this masterpiece. Performances will be conducted by Vocal Productions NYC’s favorite, Violetta Zabbi. Costume committee is led by the famous Migna Montas of the Jackie Kennedy/Onassis era.

Apollo & Dafne + Clarence & Anita, June 8-9, 2011

A double bill of Handel’s 1710 cantata
and the stage premiere of Ben Yarmolinsky’s 2010 opera
of the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill story
Apollo & Dafne + Clarence & Anita comprises a pair of operas separated by 300 years, contrasting yet thematically related. The archetypal story of Apollo’s aggression toward Dafne, her escape via metamorphosis, and the laurel wreath woven from her limbs, is revisited from multiple perspectives as American mythology. John Scott leads Sinfonia NY in the Handel; Mark Shapiro conducts the C&A Band in the Yarmolinsky. Gina Crusco directs.
